What we are doing

Achievements
  • Eight years of predator control in the Lewis Pass, with traplines in the Nina, Doubtful, Boyle Lucretia and Duchess Valleys.
  • Bird number monitoring through 5 minute bird counts in the valleys we trap in.
  • Eight years of track and hut maintenance in the Doubtful Valley.
  • Runner up in the Canterbury Aoraki Conservation Board Awards 2021.
  • Renovation of the Doubtless hut in the Doubtful Valley.
  • Online bird call ID practice. Match the bird calls to the birds.
    New calls every day: Birdle
  • Inserted a banner into our website with real time river information to guide volunteers towards safer decision making: River Levels.

Current projects
  • Predator control in the Nina Valley
  • Predator control in the Doubtful Valley
  • Predator control linking the Nina and Doubtful valleys
  • In 2025 we are counting kiwi in the Nina and Doubtful Valleys using acoustic recorders and then Laura Molles of Digilab has volunteered her AI skills and time to analyse the data.
  • In 2025 we are also focusing on whio/blue duck. We are surveying rivers in the area after hearing this bird last year. When we have identified where these elusive birds are found we will ensure there is predator control for both stoats and possums along waterways they inhabit. August update: a pair of whio is in the middle section of the Nina River where we have stoat traps on both sides of the river. We are working to get possum traps in there too as soon as we can.
Future projects
  • Renovation of the Doubtful hut, also in the Doubtful Valley.
